LASIK - Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. This is a highly effective procedure that is suitable for most presecriptions.

The entire procedure takes around 30 minutes and both eyes can be treated simultaneously. Following the treatment some patients may feel a slight irritation for just a few hours and eyes may feel a little watery and sensitive to light.

The LASIK procedure step by step:

  1. Anaesthetic drops are administered to the eye
  2. The surgeon creates a protective flap, gently lifting this to reveal the inner corneal tissue
  3. This corneal layer is then reshaped using pulses of cool laser light
  4. The flap is replaced and aligned to its original position
  5. Noticeable visual improvement occurs within just a few hours

LASEK – Laser Assisted Epithelial Keratomileusis

This is an alternative, and often a safer procedure to correct shortsight, longsight and astigmatism, and is particularly useful in patients who have a thin or irregularly shaped cornea, dry eyes or in any case where LASIK may be considered at all unsafe. Our surgeons will advise the most appropriate treatment for you.

The LASEK procedure step by step:

  1. Anaesthetic drops are administered to the eye
  2. An alcohol solution is applied to the cornea
  3. The surgeon removes the outer layer of the cornea
  4. Cool pulses of laser light are applied to the corneal stroma to alter the shape
  5. The surface layer is replaced in its original position
  6. A contact lens is placed on the eye as a ‘bandage’, which is removed a few days later
  7. Visual improvement is noticeable immediately and stabilises over the first few post-operative days
Both of these procedures can be carried out with tailor made Wavefront Guided laser to ensure optimum results for each eye treated.

Lens implants

If you are unsuitable for laser eye surgery, for example your prescription is out of range for laser, then you may well be suitable for corrective lens implants. Lens implant surgery is becoming an increasingly popular way of correcting sight. Many different types of lens implants are available and the specific details of the recommended lens implant types will be discussed with you. Lens implants can correct almost any prescription and Jersey Vision Correction have corrected many people with prescriptions over -20.00 and +12.00 with corrective lens implants.

Corneal Cross Linking for Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a corneal condition which can lead to distorted vision and in extreme cases can lead to the need for corneal transplantation. Even in mild forms it can make patients unsuitable for corrective laser treatment. However we can now carry out the revolutionary treatment known as corneal cross linking to prevent the progression of keratoconus. It can also enable many keratoconic patients to have corrective laser treatment, so they too can enjoy life without glasses or contact lenses.

Your consultation - what to expect

Consultations can be carried out either in our Jersey or Guernsey clinic. Here we provide relaxed and comfortable surroundings, the consultants and support staff will ensure that all of your questions are answered and any concerns you have are addressed, giving you total peace of mind. During the consultation we will assess your eyes and your current prescription, as well as reviewing the shape, size and thickness of the cornea and the general dimensions of your eye and the refracting surfaces. We can then advise if you are a suitable candidate for refractive surgery and, if so, what type of procedure is most appropriate for you.

Most patients experience an improvement immediately, and can often return to work within 24-48 hours. However we do advise that following your treatment you should take care not to rub your eyes, and to avoid getting water in the eyes for the first few weeks. After LASEK, swimming is fine after 2 weeks post-op. Depending on the type of treatment and your healing rate we will arrange to see you again over the following weeks and months, in either Jersey or Guernsey, ensuring that we can monitor your progress and answer any queries you have.
